The Toronto Raptors recently waived center Bruno Fernando, a move to not guarantee his contract for the rest of this season.
Fernando appeared in 17 games for Toronto. He averaged 3.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists on 53.1 percent shooting from the field.
Unfortunately, things did not work out between both parties. With Kelly Olynyk returning from injury and Chris Boucher’s strong play, it did not pave the way for Fernando to be a rotation piece.
But, as an undersized center at 6’9″, the 26-year-old utilized his 240-pound frame to make up for that size by playing with force.
Since getting waived by the Raptors, other NBA teams seemed to not have interest in bringing in the former Maryland product.
Furthermore, Fernando opted to sign with Real Madrid. Putting a brief hold on his NBA career, via Real Madrid press release.
Hopefully, Fernando can further grow as a player with this new opportunity. It stings that things did not pan out at the NBA level, but there is always a chance things open up.
However, the overseas game is no joke as scouts are always looking at former NBA players to see how they are performing.
A most recent example being Guerschon Yabusele, who signed with the Philadelphia 76ers this past summer. Yabusele played well on the French national team during the Olympics.
Perhaps, this pans out for Fernando or earns him another look from an NBA team.
In a new CBA that warrants trying to grow and develop talent in-house, maybe he becomes a cheap center option for a team.
Toronto amends Bruno Fernando’s contract
The Raptors waiving Bruno Fernando looked to be an anticipated move. After an underwhelming preseason, Toronto opted to not guarantee his contract on opening night.
This led to the franchise paying Fernando a prorated portion of his contract, each day he was on the roster. Although he did make the team, the Raptors amended Fernando’s contract by removing the guaranteed date.
