Gary Trent Jr. is still on the market.
The Toronto Raptors and Trent Jr. have reportedly gone their separate ways, so the 25-year-old will be on a new team for next season.
It remains to be seen where Trent Jr. will land as things have quieted in free agency.
However, one Eastern Conference contender has recently been linked to Trent Jr.
The Milwaukee Bucks could bring in the shooting guard, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania:
“Milwaukee is also among several contenders pursuing the top free agent remaining, Gary Trent Jr., league sources said. Trent, the 25-year-old who averaged 13.7 points on 39.3 percent 3-point shooting for Toronto last season, is taking a patient approach to find the best opportunity for his seventh NBA campaign.”
If Trent Jr. signs with the Bucks, it would require him to take a significant pay cut. He would have to sign for the veteran minimum worth $2.8 million for next season.
The Raptors had internal conversations with Trent Jr. about bringing him back but they never offered him a contract, according to Sportsnet’s Michael Grange. Trent Jr. was looking for an increase in pay following last season, but Toronto did not want to pay him more than $15 million this season.
Trent Jr. can still provide valuable three-point shooting. He is one of the best catch-and-shoot three-point shooters in the league, however he remains very streaky. Also, outside of his shooting he hasn’t shown he can do enough defensively or facilitate.
He had a down year with Toronto this past season, averaging 13.7 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. His 13.7 points and 28.1 minutes per game, were the lowest totals since his sophomore season.
If Trent Jr. wants to sign with a contender, he will earn a lot less than what he had hoped for going into this summer.
The Raptors acquired Trent Jr. in 2021 in a deal with the Portland Trail Blazers for Norman Powell.
