Upgrading the center position is a need for the Toronto Raptors this offseason.
A cost-effective option is to draft one at pick No. 9 and help strengthen their frontline behind Jakob Poeltl.
After deciding to deal Kelly Olynyk as a piece of the Brandon Ingram trade, Toronto’s frontcourt took a hit.
With Poeltl not being a young player, it would not hurt to add a prospect to be the center of the future.
Two options that could be available at No. 9 are Duke’s Khaman Maluach and Maryland’s Derik Queen. In CBS Sports’ latest mock draft, Kyle Boone projects Queen going to the Raptors.
Queen presents an intriguing dimension to the Raptors as an offensively sound big man. He averaged 16.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists as a freshman.
There is no denying his ability to score due to his footwork and finish around the rim. Also an underrated part of his game is to make plays with his passing.
Frankly, Toronto has not had a center that can get their own bucket in awhile. Queen would provide an interesting contrast to Poeltl, which teams need depending on the game.
However, the concern with the 20-year-old is rim protection, anchoring a defense is not a strength. But, as a 6’10”, 245 pound center, growing into that role is not impossible.
Additionally, Queen’s 3-point shot is a work in progress. He only shot 20 percent from distance and Toronto would need him to continue developing that aspect of his game.
Overall, if the Maryland big is available at No. 9, he can be a nice add and be a building block for the center position for years to come.
The Athletic projects Derik Queen to Raptors
Now that draft positions are solidified, mock drafts are beginning to hone in on realistic options for teams.
To that effect, the Raptors have been connected to either centers or forwards as of late. The Athletic is another media outlet that can see Toronto selecting Derik Queen at No. 9.
