The Feb. 6 trade deadline is fast approaching.
It’s been widely speculated that the Toronto Raptors will be sellers, but they could always pivot and make an aggressive push for a star.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein the Raptors are a team to keep an eye on when it comes to Brandon Ingram:
“I’m told Toronto has emerged as a team to watch when it comes to Ingram. It remains to be seen whether the Raptors become more than that where Ingram is concerned, but the mere suggestion of potential Raptors interest is the most significant development in weeks when it comes to the New Orleans forward who earned his lone All-Star berth during the 2019-20 season interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.”
Michael Grange of Sportsnet reported earlier that the Raptors are looking for a “significant piece” to pair with Scottie Barnes.
Ingram is in the final year of his contract, earning $36 million this season before he will hit unrestricted free agency this summer. It’s been widely believed since last offseason that the Pelicans are open to trading him. The Pelicans were entertaining trade discussions involving Ingram before the 2023 NBA Draft but were unable to find a deal, per Stein.
For the Raptors this would be an interesting move considering the team has just begun its rebuild. Perhaps Masai Ujiri is looking to speed up the rebuilding process and be competitive as soon as possible.
For the Raptors to make a deal for Ingram work they would have to include RJ Barrett or compile a package of multiple expiring contracts like Bruce Brown and Chris Boucher, along with draft capital. It wouldn’t be wise for the Raptors to give up their valuable future draft assets in a move like this.
It’s worth noting that the Raptors have also been looking to get involved in a potential multi-team deal for Jimmy Butler. With the trade deadline looming, things are certainly heating up.
