The Toronto Raptors got annihilated by the Boston Celtics to close out 2024, 125-71.
Worst loss in franchise history
Well, that was bad. The Raptors lost by a franchise-record 54 points to the Celtics. They came out of the gate flat scoring just 12 points in the opening frame. However, their defense actually showed up early on and held the Celtics to 45 points in the first-half. Believe it or not, the Raptors were only down by 10 going into halftime. But then the third quarter hit and the Celtics put up 45 points in the frame. In the blink of an eye, the Raptors were getting trounced. The Raptors scored just 18 points in the third and fourth quarter, respectively. This is as low as it gets for the Raptors who have now lost 11 games in a row.
Point Scottie Barnes isn’t working
The Raptors need Quickley back soon. They have been missing the presence of a true point guard on the floor. Barnes operating as the de facto point guard has limited his game. For as capable as Barnes is playing the point guard position, he is better suited playing as a forward. His offense benefits more when he’s doing his work below the free throw line. In his last 5 games, Barnes has 27 assists to 24 turnovers. Not to mention he has been taking way too many threes, which has hurt his team. He has attempted 31 threes over that same span. In this game against Boston, Barnes was 1-for-8 from three and had 6 turnovers. He was a team worst -39. The Raptors will be better off once Barnes returns to his more natural position and isn’t utilized as a point guard.
Capture the Flagg
It’s clear that the Raptors will have their eyes set on the upcoming draft as they enter 2025. For as miserable as these games have been, it’s likely going to be just as bad for the remainder of the season. At this point, the Raptors must commit to the tank and ensure they have the best chance of securing a top pick in the draft. They currently have the third worst record in the league which gives them a 14 percent chance at the No. 1 pick, which is projected to be generational talent Cooper Flagg. With the way things have been trending for the Raptors lately, there’s a realistic shot they could end up with the worst record this season.
