Devin Vassell scored 21 points, and De’Aaron Fox added 20 as the San Antonio Spurs overcame a quiet performance from Victor Wembanyama to edge the Toronto Raptors 110-107 on Wednesday night, extending their season-best winning streak to 10 games.
Wembanyama struggled offensively, finishing with 12 points on 3-of-12 shooting. He connected on just 1 of 6 from beyond the arc but went 5 for 6 at the free-throw line, missing one with 8.7 seconds left while San Antonio held a three-point lead. Brandon Ingram had a chance to tie it for Toronto but missed a 3-pointer, and Wembanyama secured the rebound to seal the victory.
Despite the tough shooting night, Wembanyama contributed eight rebounds, three assists and five blocks in 30 minutes. One of those blocks — a key rejection of Jakob Poeltl with 44 seconds remaining — proved crucial down the stretch.
Dylan Harper added 15 points for the Spurs, while Stephon Castle scored 13 and Julian Champagnie chipped in 10. San Antonio has now won five straight against Toronto.
For the Raptors, Ingram posted 20 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. Immanuel Quickley also scored 20, and Scottie Barnes added 15 as Toronto dropped its third consecutive home game.
Poeltl returned after sitting out Tuesday’s loss to Oklahoma City due to lower back soreness but came off the bench. Rookie Collin Murray-Boyles started against Wembanyama but exited in the third quarter with a sore left thumb.
Wembanyama was scoreless from the field in the first half but came out of the break strong, finishing an alley-oop from Champagnie just 38 seconds into the third quarter.
The teams were tied 69-69 midway through the third before Toronto closed the period on a 21-9 run. However, San Antonio responded in the fourth. Luke Kornet’s dunk gave the Spurs a 93-92 lead with 7:26 remaining as Toronto endured an eight-shot drought to open the quarter.
