Brooklyn Nets forward Cameron Johnson could be on the move.

Dating back to the trade deadline, Johnson was a name hotly involved in rumors. Despite all the noise, he was ultimately not moved, but those conversations are picking up once again.

As a career 39.2 percent three-point shooter, Johnson’s shooting is valuable, in addition to being an underrated defender. Teams can never get enough shooting and the Toronto Raptors are one of them.

With the NBA Draft three weeks away, Brooklyn is looking to move up into the lottery. Toronto is positioned at No. 9 and the Nets have been in communication with them revolving around Johnson and their No. 19 pick, via Nets Daily:

Draft time usually stirs up plenty of rumors and should this deal be on the table, Toronto needs to heavily consider it.

However, the Raptors would need to move a forward, in order to create playing time for Johnson. Signs point to that player being RJ Barrett, who is an unrestricted free agent in 2027.

Ironically both players are in the same free agency class. So, Toronto needs to make an early decision on what player they want to pay before making this trade.

On one hand, Johnson is a stereotypical plug and play player that allows Scottie Barnes, Brandon Ingram and Immanuel Quickley to do their on-ball creation.

However, he is 29-years-old and is four years older than Barrett. While Johnson may not fit the youth movement, Toronto wants to start winning games starting next season.

One could argue that the Nets forward solidifies that identity. Frankly, trading away Barrett may simplify roles by removing a ball-dominant player.

Cameron Johnson’s 2024-25 season stats

Given that the Nets are a rebuilding team, when the second half of the season came around, they were tanking.

Meaning that a veteran in Johnson was not playing. However, through 57 games, he put up 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists.

On solid shooting splits too, 47.5 percent from the field and 39.0 percent from three-point range.
