The NBA Draft is less than a month away for the Toronto Raptors.
Although falling two spots was not ideal in the Draft Lottery, Toronto can still select a valuable prospect.
While Toronto’s top talent is strong, rounding out their bench will presumably be top of the list with either rookies or veterans.
Simply put, there are avenues that the Raptors can take when it comes time to make a selection. In Yahoo Sports’ latest mock draft, Noah Rubin, Raphielle Johnson and Kurt Helin have Toronto selecting Texas forward Tre Johnson.
In 33 games as a freshman, the forward averaged 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists on 42.7 percent from the field and 39.7 percent from three-point range.
Johnson has a 6’10” wingspan that allows him to get his shot off in tight spaces. In addition to being 6’6″, which is a bit unorthodox due to being a movement shooter with Texas.
However, a potential downside is Johnson’s defense, but he has the tools to be a capable defender. Plus, Toronto already has a fair amount of forwards on the roster.
But, that did not concern them in previous seasons by overwhelming opponents with their length on the wing.
All in all, Johnson could bring an offensive punch off the bench and maybe even step into a starting spot should injuries present themselves.
Tre Johnson’s pro comparisons
Finding comparisons for a rookie is an exercise that happens around draft time. Some may be wildly accurate or way off the mark, but it is fun to speculate.
Scoring is a surplus in today’s NBA and there are plenty of dynamic scorers. Tre Johnson could find himself in that category if he develops accordingly.
According to NBADraft.net, they named two intriguing comparisons for Johnson in Nick Young and Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas. Young was a scoring forward during the peak of his career and Thomas is finding his way as a dynamic scoring guard.
Those comparisons seem comparable and it will be worth monitoring if Johnson can turn into that level of scorer in the NBA.
