The Atlanta Hawks are reportedly targeting Toronto Raptors executive Masai Ujiri.
According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, the Hawks are interested in hiring Ujiri for their vacant president of basketball operations role.
However, Ujiri is currently under contract with the Raptors through the 205-26 season.
“It was not immediately clear, league sources say, what sort of shot Atlanta has at prizing Ujiri away from the league’s lone Canadian franchise,” Stein wrote.
Ujiri has been with the Raptors since 2013 and helped bring the franchises’s only championship in 2019. He has been enthusiastic about the organization’s new direction and has stated many times that he wants to win again.
The Raptors are in the midst of their rebuild around Scottie Barnes. The franchise acquired Brandon Ingram from the New Orleans Pelicans to play alongside Barnes for the future. The Raptors will also have the No. 9 pick in this year’s draft as the team looks to snap a three-year playoff drought next season.
Meanwhile, in Atlanta they are looking to reshape its front office after firing general manager and former Raptors wing Landry Fields. The Hawks promoted Onsi Saleh to general manager last month and they announced that they would search for a president to work with him.
The Hawks finished this past season 40-42 and were eliminated in the Play-In Tournament for the second straight year. They have some good young talent including Jalen Johnson, the No. 1 pick of the 2024 NBA Draft Zaccharie Risacher and star Trae Young who seems content with staying in Atlanta.
If Ujiri and the Raptors did part ways, Bobby Webster figures to be the in-house choice to take over as the new head of basketball operations with the franchise.
