RJ Barrett could be on the move this summer.
After making the trade for Brandon Ingram, not only will the Toronto Raptors be an expensive team working very close to the luxury tax. But they could also have a clunky fit with Barrett, Scottie Barnes and Ingram occupying the same space. Also, Gradey Dick is currently slated in as Toronto’s starting shooting guard.
Therefore, Toronto could perhaps move Barrett sooner rather than later. According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, Barrett could be a trade candidate this summer:
“Based on conversations before the deadline, Barrett could be a trade candidate to monitor this summer.
Barrett was discussed in trade talks for Ingram with New Orleans, but the Pelicans preferred the expiring contract of Bruce Brown and stretch-five center Kelly Olynyk, who’s owed $13.45 million next season, league sources told HoopsHype. With Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones already on the wing, the Pelicans didn’t view Barrett as a suitable fit for their roster as talks would have necessitated finding a third team, sources said.”
Barrett is enjoying the best season of his career. He is averaging a career-high in points (21.7), rebounds (6.4) and assists (5.6). He’s owed $27.7 million next season and $29.62 million for the 2026-27 season. With the way he’s playing Barrett would certainly want a raise on his next deal. With Barnes, Immanuel Quickley and now Ingram on the books with big contracts, it will be difficult to keep Barrett in Toronto long term especially on a pay raise.
Toronto could use Barrett as a trade chip to bring back valuable depth pieces or they could try packaging him along with draft capital in hopes of landing another star.
It’ll be interesting to see how things play out with Barrett in Toronto.
