With the Toronto Raptors acquiring Brandon Ingram at the trade deadline, his next contract looms large.
It is going to be intriguing to see how Toronto handles this situation heading into the summer. However, Ingram needs to be able to showcase his worth to get a healthy payday.
Although, his injury concerns are readily apparent as he has yet to play more than 65 games since his rookie season. But, the Raptors did not trade for Ingram, if they did not intend to keep him long-term.
There are usually inklings of the kind of number a player wants for his new deal when a team trades for an expiring contract. With that, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported what he has heard about Ingram’s next contract:
“It sounds like they are going to do a multiyear deal that is worth nine figures. I’ll just leave it at that.”
Unfortunately, the 27-year-old has only played in 18 games this season and injuries continue to be a concern. But, he is putting up 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists on 46.5 percent shooting from the field and 37.4 percent shooting from distance.
Ingram last played on Dec. 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he ultimately turned his ankle. With not many opportunities left to showcase his talents, there is urgency mounting.
Hopefully, he is able to play next to Immanuel Quickley, Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett sooner rather than later. There is an interesting fit there, but all players need to be healthy to see it come to fruition.
Rumors were swirling about Ingram wanting a max contract or at least close to a max for his next deal. If that remains the case, Toronto needs to be cautious and tread lightly.
But, if both parties are able to come to terms on a reasonable figure, Ingram can become a nice piece on Toronto moving forward.
