The Feb. 6 trade deadline is now less than two weeks away and the Toronto Raptors still possess meaningful trade chips.
Some names being Bruce Brown, Kelly Olynyk and Chris Boucher. Jakob Poeltl is a player that opposing general managers will check in on as well.
However, Poeltl does not seem to be on the move at this point. But, things can always change with one phone call.
As a rebuilding team, Toronto is looking to acquire draft assets and potentially move off of veteran players.
With a potential blockbuster trade looming with Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler, the Raptors could help Butler get to his ultimate destination of the Phoenix Suns.
Sportsnet’s Michael Grange believes Toronto is a possible team that can help facilitate a larger deal before the deadline:
“The Raptors are holding a lot of cards,” said one opposing team source.
“They have space [under the tax threshold], expiring contracts, veteran players, their own picks. They can be involved in almost any major trade across the NBA.”
This will be worth monitoring when it comes to the Butler front. Perhaps the Suns or Heat incentivize the Raptors to take part in this deal.
Although, they need to be cautious due to potentially being asked to take back long-term money. Under this new CBA, teams are cautious more than ever about what contracts are going in and out.
Hopefully, Toronto is able to make use of their trade chips and continue their journey as a young team.
