The Toronto Raptors will have their sights set on the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft.
At 8-29 Toronto has been on of the worst teams in the league. The team has been decimated with injuries and quite frankly, they are just in need of more talent.
With Toronto committed to its young core of Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett, they are hoping to add a blue chip prospect to compliment what they already have.
The Raptors are currently projected to pick No. 3. However, there is still a few months of the season left to determine what odds the Raptors will give itself in the draft lottery.
Nonetheless, Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo of ESPN put out their latest mock draft and they project the Raptors picking at No. 4 and selecting VJ Edgecombe out of Baylor:
“The Raptors appear destined for a high draft pick and could be in the market for a combo guard such as Edgecombe, who can play on or off the ball alongside franchise stalwart Scottie Barnes. Although Edgecombe has been up and down for Baylor, teams remain intrigued: His explosiveness, improving feel, and impressive defensive playmaking (5.1% steal rate, 4.6% block rate) are key attributes that point to his upside.
He might need to perform better offensively to secure a spot this high in the draft — his shooting has been subpar — but front offices will work to understand the on-court context of his season, as he has been playing away from the ball quite a bit on a guard-driven team. If Edgecombe can turn a corner through the thick of conference play, he’ll strengthen his draft case here.” — Woo
The Raptors are in need of a combo guard who can play alongside and thrive next to Barnes. With Gradey Dick’s struggles, the Raptors could be looking to fill his spot in the starting lineup. Edgecombe is someone who has great athleticism and explosiveness to the basket, which this team needs.
He has also shown a lot of promise on the defensive end which will be intriguing for a Raptors team that has struggled mightily in that department.
