Ja’Kobe Walter has burst onto the scene for the Toronto Raptors.
Walter was with Raptors 905, but got called up when Gradey Dick suffered a calf strain.
Walter made his first career start last week against the New Orleans Pelicans and finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.
He made his second start on Nov. 29 in Miami and finished with 6 points. His latest start came on Dec. 1, as Walter chipped in with 12 points helping the Raptors secure the win over the Heat.
Walter has showcased a little bit of everything for the Raptors. He has shown his ability to be a shot creator, he’s done a good job finishing plays, handling the ball and his defense has been impressive in stints.
“He needs reps and confidence and figuring out the lead and the speed of the game but I like the swag that he’s playing with,” Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic told reporters. “I like the confidence he brings to the court and his teammates they like it as well.”
Walter has seen extended playing time over his last 3 games and has been on the floor in critical moments. He has learned a lot from his teammates as he adjusts to life in the NBA.
“Scottie [Barnes], him being a leader on the team, he’s directed me in a lot of positions, Davion [Mitchell] and then having a vet like Garrett Temple that’s been through the NBA and seen a lot, talking to him all throughout the game is definitely helping me out,” Walter said.
When the Raptors are fully healthy, Walter will likely spend most of this season with Raptors 905. However, if he continues to make the most out of these reps, he will make a strong case to remain in the rotation.
