The Toronto Raptors will officially honor Vince Carter.
The Raptors are set to retire Carter’s No. 15 jersey and raise it to the rafters on Saturday evening. This will be the first jersey ever retired by the franchise and it comes during the team’s 30th anniversary season.
Toronto will retire Carter’s jersey at halftime, which is expected to be roughly a 20-minute-long ceremony in the middle of the Raptors game against the Sacramento Kings.
Raptors president and vice-chairman Masai Ujiri will speak along with Carter who will be joined by his family and many former Raptors players and teammates.
This is going to be a very special moment for Carter so don’t be surprised if he gets a little emotional.
There has been a lot of talk about the Raptors choosing to retire Carter’s jersey first. Many felt Kyle Lowry was going to receive that honor. However, Lowry is currently still playing and the Raptors didn’t want to wait any longer to honor Carter. The Raptors talked to Lowry before deciding to retire the 47-year-old’s jersey and they got his blessing to go ahead.
“Conversations were had. For me, it was like, yeah. He’s deserving of that for sure,” Lowry said last Friday in Toronto, via Sports Illustrated’s Aaron Rose.
Once Lowry retires, he will certainly be honored by the Raptors next. Then after Lowry, DeMar DeRozan who will be in town with the Kings for the ceremony could also be honored by the franchise.
Nonetheless, this evening will be all about Carter as he will be engraved in Raptors’ history forever.
