Toronto Raptors governor and chairman of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) Larry Tanenbaum has been re-elected as the chairman of the NBA Board of Governors, the league announced. Tanenbaum is the first Canadian to hold this position.
Tanenbaum took over as governor of the Raptors in 1998 ahead of their fourth season as an NBA team. He found almost immediate success as the head decision-maker, clinching postseason berths from his second to his fourth season consecutively. In 26 seasons, his Raptors have made the playoffs 13 times and won a championship in the 2018-19 NBA season.
He holds the same governor title with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL and Toronto FC of the MLS. He is adding a fourth franchise to his ledger. Toronto was awarded a team in the next wave of WNBA expansion. This is the first WNBA team to exist outside of the United States, and they will begin play for the 2026 WNBA campaign.
Via the NBA’s press release, “As chairman of MLSE, Tanenbaum has been recognized for his contributions in the areas of philanthropy, business and volunteerism. In 2007, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, the highest civilian award in the country’s honours system.”
Tanenbaum’s Raptors have fallen on some hard times. The team needed to move away from some of its most influential players for the long-term health of the franchise. But Tanenbaum being re-elected as the chairman of the Board of Governors shows how widely respected he is in the league.
And governors who carry that level of respect are certain to turn their teams around in short order.
Raptors 905 schedule for 2024-25 season
The Raptors are about to begin preparations on an intriguing 2024-2025 season. At the same time, their G League affiliate — Raptors 905 — is preparing for their own campaign.
Raptors 905 did not have a great year in 2023-2024. They finished 14th in the Eastern Conference with a 13-21 record during the regular season. But the hope is that with less roster turnover than the Raptors had last season, they can be a stronger presence in the G League.
It starts with the G League Tip-Off and Showcase Cup games. The G League season is essentially split into two separate campaigns. The Raptors 905 have finally released their schedule for both.
Raptors 905 opens the Tip-Off and Showcase Cup section of the season on Nov. 9 on the road against the Delaware Blue Coats. They play five games on the road before returning to Ontario for their home opener against the Long Island Nets on Nov. 22.
