The Toronto Raptors drop their Summer League finale to the San Antonio Spurs 100-89.

The Raptors were without Jonathan Mogbo (back contusion), Gradey Dick (right ankle sprain), Ochai Agbaji (right shin contusion) and Javon Freeman-Liberty (illness).

Despite the loss there were a lot of positive takeaways for the Raptors from this one:

Ulrich Chomche looks like a monster defensively

Chomche had an impressive game defensively to closeout Summer League. The 18-year-old has tremendous defensive upside. He had 5 blocked shots in this game and he already looks like an impactful defensive player. Chomche needs to work on finishing inside, but his rim protection is stellar.

Ja’Kobe Walter finishes up strong

Walter had a nice outing against the Spurs. He moved well in space and without the ball. His shooting efficiency is still a work in progress but he looked a lot more comfortable. He hit a nice step back three and did a great job of being aggressive, getting to the free throw line 8 times (7-8). Walter also displayed some nice on ball defense, showcasing his 3-and-D potential.

Jamal Shead plays hard

Shead did a little bit of everything in his final Summer league game. He finished with 18 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal. He shot it well from the field (7-15), although he didn’t make a three (0-2). Shead showcased some nice playmaking and operated well in the pick-and-roll. His defence continues to be strong as well. Shead’s high motor was on full display throughout Summer League.

Some other standouts were Carlson who finished the game with 11 points and 5 rebounds. D.J. Carton who finished with 17 points and Canadian Quincy Guerrier who chipped in with 10 points from off the bench.

Summer League comes to a close

The Raptors finish up Summer League with a 2-3 record. They got off to a hot start at 2-0, but then dropped their final three games.

Overall, there was a lot of encouraging play for the Raptors in Summer League, particularly from the rookies.
