The Toronto Raptors had a busy last couple of days.
The expectation is that NBA free agency will be relatively quiet for them. However, Toronto could still be active on the trade market.
The Raptors picked up Bruce Brown’s $23 million team option. The expectation now is that they will try and trade him this offseason.
In terms of other potential trades the Raptors could make, Brooklyn Net’s forward Cam Johnson has recently been linked to Toronto.
The Nets made it clear they are tearing it down after trading Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks, so they could continue to navigate trades.
Johnson has drawn trade interest from several teams including the Raptors, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto:
“Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson has drawn recent trade interest from several teams, including the Toronto Raptors and Sacramento Kings, league sources told HoopsHype.”
Johnson is 28-years-old and doesn’t have an appealing contract. He’s locked in for another three seasons. He’s set to earn $23 million for 2024-25, $21 million for 2025-26 and $23 million for 2026-27.
Brown for Johnson works but the Nets would most likely want draft picks back in that deal, which is counterproductive for Toronto. The Raptors aren’t in a position where they should surrender draft capital for a player that isn’t going to make a big difference in terms of wins and loses.
At his age and price point, the rebuilding Raptors shouldn’t pursue Johnson.
Former Raptor Precious Achiuwa set to hit unrestricted free agency
Former Toronto Raptors forward Precious Achiuwa is set to enter unrestricted free agency.
New York did not extend a qualifying offer to Achiuwa, according to Fred Katz of The Athletic.
