O.G. Anunoby is likely staying with the New York Knicks.
The former Toronto Raptors wing is expected to re-sign with the Knicks this offseason.
The Knicks are said to be in a “good place” with Anunoby on a new contract, according to SNY’s Ian Begley.
Anunoby has a player option for next season that he’s highly likely to opt out of before signing a new lucrative contract in free agency.
The Knicks can sign Anunoby to a max deal of five years for $245 million in free agency.
Begley writes the Knicks will have competition for Anunoby. He mentions the Philadelphia 76ers as a team that could try and sign him.
The Raptors traded Anunoby to the Knicks in December along with Precious Achiuwa and Malachi Flynn for Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett and the No. 31 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft via the Detroit Pistons.
Fred Katz of The Athletic noted Anunoby’s market could reach into the $35-40 million range annually.
The Raptors could theoretically create cap space if they were to part ways with Gary Trent Jr. and Bruce Brown this offseason. However, it still wouldn’t be enough to land Anunoby. The Raptors would have to make other big changes to create enough cap to sign him.
While it would be a crazy swerve for Anunoby to return to Toronto, it’s highly unlikely to happen. The 26-year-old seems destined to remain on the Knicks for the foreseeable future.
Anunoby helped the Knicks get to the second round of the NBA Playoffs. If he hadn’t gotten injured, New York would’ve likely made the Eastern Conference Finals.
