Jordi Fernandez will be coaching Team Canada this summer.
Team Canada’s general manager Rowan Barrett announced that Fernandez will be with the team this summer at the Paris Olympics even though he was named the new head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.
Barrett put out a statement via Canada Basketball:
“Canada Basketball is excited that our senior men’s national team head coach, Jordi Fernandez, has been hired by the Brooklyn Nets as their next head coach. This is a great opportunity that Jordi and his family have worked long & hard to achieve and he deserves the trust Brooklyn is showing him. We have been working closely with both Jordi and the Nets throughout the process, and we can confirm that Jordi will remain as our head coach this summer at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, as we look to build on the success we had last summer at the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup.”
Fernandez was named the head coach of Team Canada following the departure of former Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse, who stepped down from his position at the time. Nurse took a job with the Philadelphia 76ers and was unable to commit to the Canadian men’s national basketball team last summer.
This summer will be the first time the Canadian men’s basketball team has qualified for the Olympics since 2000. The team clinched a bronze medal last summer at the FIBA World Cup as they knocked off Spain to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Canada will enter the tournament as the seventh-ranked team in the world.
Fernandez named Nets head coach
Fernandez was hired on April 22 as head coach of the Nets. Brooklyn is looking to bounce back after missing the playoffs. Fernandez had previously been an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings.
The Raptors interviewed Fernandez last summer for their head coaching job after the team fired Nurse. Darko Rajakovic was eventually hired as the new Raptors head coach.
