At the NBA Trade Deadline, the Toronto Raptors traded Dennis Schroder and Thaddeus Young to the Brooklyn Nets for Spencer Dinwiddie who Toronto later waived.

Schroder’s time with the Raptors only lasted 51 games. He was signed in free agency after Toronto lost Fred VanVleet to the Houston Rockets.

He began his Raptors tenure as a starter, before losing his starting job to Gary Trent Jr.

Then the Raptors traded for Immanuel Quickley and that put an end to the 30-year-old’s hopes of getting back into the starting lineup.

As the Raptors headed into a rebuild moving off from Schroder made the most sense.

Schroder made his return to Toronto on Feb. 22 and before the game, TSN’s Kayla Grey asked him about the time he spent in Toronto:

“I mean, that’s a tough one. Because, I mean, I came off a historic summer and was thinking about doing the same thing here (in Toronto). That wasn’t really their intentions, it was a little different. But at the end of the day, I mean, I play in the best league in the world still and am good to competeWith the Toronto Raptors, won a couple of games lost a couple of games, close ones. But, I mean, sorry, that it didn’t go the way we wanted it — or I wanted it.But that’s part of the business and you just gotta to accept it and move on.”

Schroder is the ultimate professional. Although his tenure in Toronto was cut short he still has a lot of respect for the Raptors.

Schroder was not thrilled about coming off the bench for Toronto

According to Sportsnet’s Michael Grange, Schroder was not thrilled about coming off the bench for a rebuilding team:

“Schroder wasn’t exactly thrilled with being relegated to the bench on a rebuilding team after coming to the Raptors in the off-season with high hopes of starting on and leading a playoff team.”

The irony is that the German guard is now on the bench for another rebuilding team in the Nets.

It was speculated that a contending team would make a move for Schroder before the deadline, but it was Brooklyn that ended up snatching the veteran.
