The Toronto Raptors have gone through some significant changes in the past month.
The team first traded O.G. Anunoby to the New York Knicks and then they dealt Pascal Siakam to the Indiana Pacers.
Toronto finally chose a direction and made it clear that they are rebuilding around their ace Scottie Barnes.
There could be more moves coming for Toronto before the Feb. 8 trade deadline. Team President Masai Ujiri hinted that the team is not done shaking up their roster.
According to TSN’s Josh Lewenberg, the Raptors are “open for business” ahead of the trade deadline. Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett are considered to be the only untouchables on the team. Veterans like Chris Boucher, Bruce Brown, Dennis Schroder, Gary Trent Jr. and even Jakob Poeltl could be on the move:
“If they can turn any of their vets – Gary Trent, Dennis Schroder, Chris Boucher, the newly acquired Bruce Brown or perhaps even Jakob Poeltl – into picks or prospects that would help push the rebuild forward, it’s hard to see them passing that up.”
The Raptors could be heading towards a potential fire sale. The team has their young core set in Barnes, Barrett and Quickley so reconstructing the roster around them makes sense.
Raptors could get busy making moves
Trent Jr. is an unrestricted free agent, so the Raptors could look to get something for him instead of potentially losing him for nothing this offseason.
The Raptors could trade Schroder and Boucher who should have interest from playoff teams looking to bolster their bench.
Brown is said to have significant interest from around the league, so the Raptors could leverage that and cash in on a nice haul for him.
Also, Poeltl has made it clear that he isn’t interested in being on a tanking team and he wants to compete. Therefore, the Raptors could look to move him for some future assets too.
The Raptors could look a lot different after Feb. 8.
