The Toronto Raptors made a big trade shaking up their roster when they sent O.G. Anunoby, Malachi Flynn and Precious Achiuwa to the New York Knicks for RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley and a 2024 second-round draft pick (via Detroit).
The Raptors bring in Barrett and Quickley who are two top scorers and should start for Toronto.
This was a retooling move for the Raptors, however they could be looking to do more.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Raptors are expected to continue to explore trades involving forward Pascal Siakam.
Siakam is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. To this point he and the Raptors have not had any conversations about an extension.
Therefore, it is believed that the Raptors could look to trade Siakam next to fully reset things in Toronto and enter a rebuild.
Many teams have already been linked to Siakam. Sportsnet’s Michael Grange reports that the Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks are the most likely teams that will pursue Siakam:
“The view among the league insiders I spoke with after the Knicks trade broke was that the Raptors are likely just getting started. Siakam is likely going to be pursued by the Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks and the Dallas Mavericks, per league sources. As the trade deadline gets closer, there will likely be more suitors.”
All the teams mentioned make sense. The Pacers are looking to take the next step. So pairing an All-Star like Siakam with Tyrese Haliburton would be a deadly duo.
The Hawks desperately need to change things up so they are due for a big trade and the Mavericks are arguably another star away from being a true championship contender.
Will the Raptors trade Siakam?
Masai Ujiri finally pulled the trigger on a big move and he could just be getting started. It’s clear that the Raptors are finally serious about making some significant changes and building around Scottie Barnes seems to be the goal.
