The Toronto Raptors had one of their worst three-point shooting performances of the season in their 119-106 loss to the New York Knicks on Dec. 1.
Toronto went 6/32 from three for 18.8 percent. The Raptors poor three-point shooting is the main reason why they didn’t stand a chance against a Knicks team that made 16 threes. Donte DiVincenzo made more threes (7) than the Raptors combined.
This wasn’t the first game where the Raptors struggled mightily from deep. Toronto’s three-point shooting had gotten worse. The Raptors finished 28th in three-point shooting last season and they are 29th this season. The Raptors are 27th in true shooting percentage. They were 27th last year and the year before that.
That shows that the Raptors have been a terrible three-point and free throw shooting team and there’s been nothing done to properly address it.
When looking at the Raptors roster they don’t have many three-point shooters. O.G. Anunoby has been the team’s best shooter from deep at 40 percent. Scottie Barnes has seen his three-point shot improve drastically. He is shooting it 38.2 percent from three, which is up from the 28.1 percent he shot it at last season.
Outside of those two, then it’s clear to see that the Raptors don’t have capable three-point shooters. Dennis Schroder is actually having a career year from three-point range shooting it at 35.2 percent but that’s still low compared to league standard, especially from a point guard. Jakob Poeltl does not shoot the three and then Pascal Siakam has been terrible from downtown, which has really hurt this Raptors offense.
Siakam is shooting it 19.8 percent from three. This is his worst three-point shooting clip of his career since his rookie season. Then on the bench Malachi Flynn is shooting it at a low 34 percent. Meanwhile, Gary Trent Jr. who was supposed to be Toronto’s best shooter has been wildly inconsistent with his shot. He’s shooting the three ball at 36.4 percent.
The Raptors were hoping guys like rookie Gradey Dick and Otto Porter Jr. would help their three-point shooting woes but they haven’t been consistently playable.
Three-point shooting highlights poor roster construction
Things that continue to hurt the Raptors is their lack of bench production and poor three-point shooting.
The Raptors three-point shooting not improving stems from management not properly addressing the roster.
