One of the prolific bench scorers in NBA history, Lou Williams retired in June 2023, winning three Sixth Man of the Year awards.
The 6’1″ guard played 1,123 games and 16 seasons, playing one season with the Toronto Raptors during the 2014-15 season. That one season would result in one of his Sixth Man of the Year awards.
Williams appeared in 80 games averaging 15.5 points on 40.4% from the field and 34% from 3 in 25.2 minutes. Toronto finished 49-33 that year and ranked fourth in offensive rating.
The guard was the third leading scorer for the Raptors behind Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan. While it was a short stint for Williams, he was on Podcast P with Paul George and spoke on his time with Toronto:
Lou Williams on his time w/ the Raptors:
“If you know anything about Toronto, they roll the red carpet out for you. So when I had that, I can’t imagine how it was when they won that championship—I envy that…one of the greatest years of my career…I had a ton of fun.” pic.twitter.com/B7WxZeLMaN

This was a glowing review from Williams, who was a journeyman and made various stops throughout his career. Toronto has had struggles signing big name free agents over the years and had to make big moves through trades.
The most notable move was Kawhi Leonard, who the Raptors acquired via trade and it ultimately resulted in the franchises’ first championship in 2019. Leonard spent one season in Toronto as well and it resulted in a title.
Having former Raptors speak about their positive experiences will help turn the tide when it comes to Toronto being an attractive free agent destination.
Toronto has proven to have a dedicated fan base, which may be intriguing for future signings.
Former Raptor Stanley Johnson reveals why he signed with Toronto
Another former Raptors player who shared a positive experience was Stanley Johnson.
A lottery pick in 2015, Johnson went to the Raptors to find some footing in this league.
Johnson credited the Raptors development system and the front office during his two seasons there.
