Precious Achiuwa is another Raptors player who will be a free agent next summer.
The Raptors did not agree to a contract extension with Achiuwa before Monday’s deadline.
Achiuwa will now head into restricted free agency next summer.
It makes sense that both sides didn’t agree to a deal. Achiuwa has not played to his fullest potential the last two seasons and he can prove his worth this season and earn a bigger contract.
Meanwhile, the Raptors can also wait and see if Achiuwa develops and plays well this season before they commit to deal with him.
Achiuwa isn’t the only one who did not receive an extension from the Raptors before the deadline. Malachi Flynn also did not receive and extension and he remains on the final year of his deal.
The Raptors now have a long list of 2024 free agents on their team which includes: Achiuwa, Flynn, Pascal Siakam, O.G. Anunoby, Gary Trent Jr., Otto Porter Jr., Thad Young and Garrett Temple.
With more than half the roster expected to become a free agent after this season ends, this is truly looking like a wait and see season for the Raptors.
Masai Ujiri and company clearly want to see how this group performs before committing to certain players long term.
Raptors free agency
The biggest priority will be Pascal Siakam. He and the Raptors haven’t agreed to a new deal yet and Siakam would be eligible for the supermax deal if he makes the All-NBA team this season. The Raptors can’t afford to potentially lose Siakam for nothing like Fred VanVleet.
O.G. Anunoby is another interesting situation to monitor because he will certainly opt out of his contract and hit the open market next summer. Anunoby will definitely have a lot of suitors willing to pay him.
There was some talk about the Raptors getting an extension done with Trent Jr. in the summer, but that never panned out as well.
The Raptors having most of their key players and players not extended is a bit concerning, but at the same time it leaves their options open. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.
