Toronto Raptors guard Gradey Dick is taking advantage of the preseason.
As he prepares for his sophomore season, Dick is using this exhibition schedule to get his shots up.
When coming into the NBA, he was known as a three-point shooter as a Kansas Jayhawk. But, Dick certainly has the skillset to be more than a shooter.
With Toronto in a rebuild, the 20-year-old gets to grow next to young stars in Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett. In addition to getting more opportunity to shine as opposing teams are going to focus on those three.
However, without Barrett and Quickley, Dick put together an impressive performance against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday. In 32 minutes, he put up 27 points on 12-for-21 from the field and 3-for-8 from three-point range.
This particularly excited head coach Darko Rajakovic as Dick showcased that he is more than a spot-up shooter. Rajakovic spoke to reporters about Dick’s next stages in development:
“I believe that Gradey [Dick] is much more offensively than just spot up shooter, last season we talked about the vision for him, this is kind of like that, next layer to it and there are more layers to it that he needs to work on and develop but I do believe that if you’re just spot up three-point shooter in modern time NBA that’s great skill but that’s not enough to maximize your potential and to maximize your usage on a team so everything that’s coming off of cuts and drives and slip outs that needs to be developed but also his one-on-one game drives and it’s going to come, pick and rolls when he’s going to be able to play in those as well.”
Hopefully, having a scoring outburst of this magnitude boosts Dick’s confidence.
