The 2024 NBA Draft is two weeks away.
The Toronto Raptors might have their eye on someone in the top portion of the draft.
Doug Smith of the Toronto Star appeared on The Bob McCowan Podcast and he talked about Toronto’s upcoming draft:
“I’m told by a guy that if they had stayed in the lottery, kept that top-six pick, they had a guy they wanted, that they really really liked and thought they’d be able to get. I think if they can find a way to get that guy they would do it, but I think that’s a lot. It’s really really hard.”
The Raptors missed out on a top-six pick when their own first-round pick fell to No. 8 and went to the San Antonio Spurs as per compensation for the Jakob Poeltl trade in 2023.
The Raptors currently have the No. 19 and No. 31 picks in the draft. Smith did say that the Raptors would like to trade up into the top 10 but he doesn’t see them pulling it off.
International prospects Zaccharie Risacher and Alex Sarr are both expected to be in the top 3. UConn’s Donovan Clingan and Stephon Castle along with Matas Buzelis of the G League Ignite and Kentucky’s Reed Sheppard are all projected to go in the top-six.
Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer recently reported that the Raptors are one of three teams including the Portland Trail Blazers and Cleveland Cavaliers who are trying to trade up in the draft.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Raptors do end up getting a deal done before the draft. However, given their current situation it seems unlikely they will be able to get something done.
The draft is set for June 26 and 27.
