The Toronto Raptors traded Dennis Schroder on Feb. 8 before the NBA Trade Deadline.
Toronto sent him to the Brooklyn Nets along with Thaddeus Young for Spencer Dinwiddie who the Raptors later waived.
Schroder played just half a season with the Raptors after signing a two-year $26 million contract with the team in the summer of 2023.
Schroder averaged 13.7 points, 6.1 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 51 games for the Raptors in his career.
His role with the Raptors changed. First he was brought in as the team’s starter and then Toronto benched him in favor of playing Scottie Barnes at the point. Then the Raptors traded for Immanuel Quickley and he became Toronto’s full-time starting point guard.
The German clearly did not fit with the Raptors long-term plans after the team elected to rebuild so Toronto moving on from him made a lot of sense.
However, Schroder seemed surprised by the news that he was traded.
A big indicator of this is that Schroder had a Raptors-themed cake at his son’s birthday party over the weekend.
He posted a series of photos from his son Dennis Schroder Jr’s recent milestone to his Instagram story on Feb. 11. One of the photos shared was a family shot featuring a large basketball-shaped cake, which had the Raptors crest.
“Yes, we planned before I got traded,” Schroder wrote:

Schroder joins the seventh team of his career
The Nets mark the seventh NBA team Schroder has played for in his career.
The 30-year-old seems happy about his new journey and has a positive attitude about it via his Nets press conference on YouTube:
“Having a family, having three kids, a wife, it’s not easy, but at the end of the day, nothing really changed. Of course, I go to a new city, new situation, but at the end of the day, we play basketball for a living, and I’m really extremely grateful for it.”
Schroder scored 15 points and had 12 assists in his Nets debut.
