Dennis Schroder had a perfect FIBA World Cup. He helped Germany win gold at the tournament for the first time and won FIBA World Cup MVP.
He averaged 19.1 points and 6.1 assists per game while having a heavy role in Germany’s offense.
Now Schroder will get ready for the start of the 2023-24 NBA season with the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors signed Schroder to a two-year, $26 million deal after the team lost Fred VanVleet to the Houston Rockets in free agency.
His role with the Raptors is still unknown. The Raptors have to make a decision to either start Schroder or bring him from off the bench as the team’s Sixth Man.
Pascal Siakam, Scottie Barnes, OG Anuonby and Jakob Poeltl will definitely be starters for the Raptors. The fifth member of the staring lineup is up for debate.
If first-time head coach Darko Rajokvic is sold with Schroder as the starting point guard and believes his play at the FIBA World Cup will translate to success at the NBA level, then it’s Trent Jr. who will come off the bench.
However if Rajokvic decides to go with a bigger lineup and utilize Scottie Barnes as the full-time point guard, while keeping Gary Trent Jr. in the starting lineup for his shooting, then Schroder would be the first man from off the bench.
For now, it’s a waiting game to see what the Raptors do. All eyes will be on Schroder when the Raptors play in their first preseason game against the Sacramento Kings on Oct. 8
Schroder’s role with the Raptors
With Fred VanVleet no longer in Toronto, the Raptors need someone to help replace his production. Raptors are hoping that Schroder can make up for the bulk of it.
Schroder only posted 12.6 points and 4.5 assists per game with the Lakers last season. However, he should be able to top those numbers with the Raptors.
No matter how the Raptors use Schroder, he’ll be ready to bring his confidence and swagger to Toronto.
Schroder should be on everyone’s radar after his stellar FIBA World Cup tournament run with Germany.
