Toronto Raptors point guard Dennis Schroder just had an impressive showing at the 2023 FIBA World Cup tournament.
Schroder led Team Germany past the likes of Slovenia, USA and Serbia on their way to a gold medal. It’s Germany’s first gold medal ever at the FIBA World Cup.
Schroder was named the MVP of the tournament, as he averaged 19.1 points and 6.1 assists per game.
He was the main focal point of Germany’s offense and played some of his best basketball when his country needed him the most.
Schroder had 17 points and 9 assists against Team USA and then saved his best game for last putting up 28 points in a win over Serbia in the FIBA World Cup Final.
He had Germany unbeaten throughout the tournament and his overall efforts has him joining some elite company.
Schroder winning FIBA World Cup MVP puts him in a group of just six players that have earned the same honors.
The list includes Pau Gasol, fellow German Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Ricky Rubio:
FIBA World Cup MVPs this century:
2002: Dirk Nowitzki
2006: Pau Gasol
2010: Kevin Durant
2014: Kyrie Irving
2019: Ricky Rubio
2023: DENNIS SCHRODER#FIBAWC— Bryan Fonseca 🇵🇷 (@BryanFonsecaNY) September 10, 2023
When looking at his full body of work throughout the tournament, Schroder deserves this. He was consistently Germany’s best player and the best player of the tournament. The only blemish on Schroder’s FIBA World Cup resume was a 4-26 stinker he had against Latvia.
Dennis Schroder is now a world champion and he documented his experience in his latest video on YouTube.
Successful summer for Schroder
Schroder had himself quite the summer. He signed a two-year deal worth $26 million with the Raptors, led Team Germany to gold and won FIBA World Cup MVP.
The Raptors decision to let Fred VanVleet walk in free agency and replace him with a much cheaper option in Schroder might end up looking like a genius move.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Raptors utilize Schroder but after his latest run of excellence, he should be seeing a lot of minutes in Toronto whether it’s as a starter or from off the bench.
